What to Do When a Dental Emergency Occurs

Dental emergencies can happen at any time, and knowing how to respond quickly can make all the difference in saving a tooth and relieving pain. At Moritis & Shin Dentistry, we want our patients to feel confident in handling dental emergencies, whether it’s a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or another urgent dental problem.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental issue is an emergency, but some situations do require immediate attention. If you or your child experiences a knocked-out or displaced tooth, severe or persistent tooth pain, a cracked or broken tooth, swelling in the gums or jaw, or bleeding that doesn’t stop, it’s important to contact a dentist right away. Injuries to the mouth or jaw from trauma are also considered emergencies and should be treated as soon as possible.

Quick action can prevent further damage and help ensure a successful treatment.

What to Do if a Tooth is Knocked Out

If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, prompt and careful action is critical. First, try to remain calm. Handling the situation quickly can save the tooth. When picking up the tooth, hold it by the crown and avoid touching the root to prevent damage. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or a saline solution. Avoid scrubbing or using soap or chemicals.

If possible, try to place the tooth back into its socket. If this isn’t feasible, keep it in a container with milk, saline, or even saliva. Then, call Moritis & Shin Dentistry immediately. The faster you get to our office, the greater the chances of saving the tooth.

Other Common Dental Emergencies

Teeth can chip, crack, or suffer damage in ways other than being knocked out. If your child chips a tooth, rinse the mouth with warm water and save any broken pieces. A cold compress can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Severe tooth pain should not be ignored. Rinse the mouth and gently floss to remove any food that may be causing pressure, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.

If a filling or crown comes loose, save the restoration and try to cover the exposed tooth with temporary dental cement or sugar-free gum until professional care is available.

Receiving Emergency Dental Care

When you arrive at our office, our team will quickly evaluate the problem and determine the best course of action. We may take X-rays, provide pain relief, and stabilize the affected tooth or surrounding area. Depending on the situation, we can repair, replace, or restore the damaged tooth. After treatment, we’ll provide instructions to ensure proper healing and prevent further complications. Our goal is to reduce pain, protect your teeth, and restore your smile as efficiently as possible.
